Understanding the MNRF Zone System

Ontario is divided into 20 different Fisheries Management Zones (FMZs). The regulations, catch limits, and open seasons vary wildly depending on which zone your boat ramp is situated in. Do not rely entirely on global regulations; consult the exact FMZ rules before casting.

Zone 20 (Lake Ontario & Major Tributaries)

  • Status: Heavily pressured but massive sportfishery capacity.
  • Primary Targets: Chinook Salmon (King), Coho Salmon, Lake Trout, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout (Steelhead), Walleye (especially in the Bay of Quinte).
  • Key Regulation Note: Specific tributaries running into Lake Ontario have highly restricted sanctuary dates where fishing is banned to protect spawning salmonids.

Zone 19 (Lake Erie)

  • Status: The Walleye Capital of the World.
  • Primary Targets: Walleye (Pickerel), Yellow Perch, Smallmouth Bass.
  • Key Regulation Note: Catch limits for Walleye change dynamically based on the health of the previous year's stock. Erie is prone to massive, violent shallow-water squalls. Ensure your Transport Canada safety gear is secured.

Zone 17 (Lake Simcoe, Kawarthas & Trent-Severn Waterway)

  • Status: Canada's premier Ice Fishing and Summer Bass factory.
  • Primary Targets: Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Muskie (Muskellunge), Yellow Perch, Lake Trout, Whitefish.
  • Key Regulation Note: Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching possess unique regulations compared to the surrounding Kawartha lakes. Ensure proper vessel licensing if crossing locks on the Trent-Severn.

Zone 14 & 15 (Georgian Bay & Muskoka Lakes)

  • Status: Deep Canadian Shield lakes, clear water, and massive rocky shoals.
  • Primary Targets: Northern Pike, Muskie, Lake Trout, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye.
  • Key Regulation Note: Due to deep, jagged rock hazards historically mapping to Georgian Bay, offshore V-hull safety protocols are heavily recommended.
